International Day of Families

 

The vision of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon for International Day of Families is as follows:

“As we strive to usher in a more sustainable future, achieve the Millennium Development Goals, shape a new development agenda and combat climate change, let us mobilize the world’s families.”

 

The theme issued for this year’s observance is – “Men in Charge? Gender Equality and Children’s Rights in Contemporary Families”

 

What is the Purpose of International Day of Families?

The main reason for the observance is to emphasise the importance of families as basic units of society. The purpose of 2015 International Day of Families is to promote gender equality and the rights of children in families. It is also necessary to highlight the prevention of family violence through fair family law frameworks and various program interventions.

 

The History of International Day of Families

The day was first proclaimed as International Day of Families to be celebrated on 15 may, in 1993. The International Day provides the chance to promote awareness of issues that relate to family life and to increase awareness of social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.

 

The celebration of International Day of Families has inspired a variety of awareness campaigns and events. Some of these include national family days with activities like workshops and conferences, radio and television programs, newspaper articles and cultural programs that highlight the relevant theme.

 

How Can You Become Involved in International Day of Families

There are so many events and activities to choose from on local, national and international levels. These include workshops, seminars, exhibitions and organised discussions to raise awareness of the annual theme. There are educational sessions held for children and adolescents. Some countries offer tool kits to help people organise celebrations aimed at particular population sections.
