In today’s times what we hear on the news and the internet about the state of the South African labour market can make us feel uncertain about our position in society.
Stats SA has recently shared what they found in the Quarterly Labour Force Survey for the first quarter of 2020. The results showed that the population taking part in the labour force (by currently being employed or seeking employment) increased to 60.3%, while the number of employed South Africans between the age of 15-64 has decreased to 42.1%.
South Africa is a diverse country with its own challenges and opportunities. Much like the careers available in the labour market. Did you know there are over 1400 careers available in South Africa? There is a profession for everyone that will work with your unique interests, talents, and aspirations. But not everyone knows of all the options there are to choose from or how to approach them.
What You Can Do
Now is the best time for you to be aware of your career options, whether you are a high school graduate, or someone who wants to start your own business. You might want to move up in your career, look for a different job opportunity, or simply work on your skills to be the best working individual you can be. You will find that others must overcome the same type of challenges as you do and there is always a chance for a positive change in your life.
A fundamental step in the process of managing your professional life is to stay informed of what’s out there. That is, it is important to find out what you can do to help yourself, and others, when it comes to career choices. This way we can strive to create a world where we are all able to reach our potential by doing what you love and being better at it.
Furthermore, we can take some wisdom from Steve Jobs, who once said: “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.”
